Exposed Spine Binding Tutorial

  • Difficulty: Medium
  • Perfect for first-time bookbinders, artists, DIYers and journal keepers
  • Carefully curated by hand-bookbinders for you

Exposed-spine binding is a non-adhesive binding method whereby a book’s covers and signatures are hand-sewn together leaving the spine exposed. The pattern on the spine is formed using a combination of the cross stitch and chain stitch methods and, when combined, creates a striking weave pattern. In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to create an
exposed-spine journal using a single needle.

Exposed-spine bindings make for beautiful guest books, photo albums, sketchbooks and journals. Besides the attractive book spine, these books are also very durable. For artists and writers looking for a beautifully handmade book that can lay completely flat when open, an exposed spine journal is a great choice.
