This binding style is perfect for creating photo albums, guest books, sketchbooks, journals and notebooks.
The Coptic stitch method has been used since as early at the second century A.D. by the Copts, early Christians in Ancient Egypt. With this method, a book’s covers and text block are hand-sewn together leaving the spine of the book exposed. The visible Coptic stitch resembles chain stitching –a stitching method used in embroidery– and has also become known as the chain stitch.

There are two main reasons Coptic binding is popular: firstly, the book is very flexible and can be opened a full 360 degrees without damaging the book’s spine (the pages can open up fully which makes writing/sketching/painting easier); secondly, the book’s exposed spine is very attractive.

This easy-to-follow guide illustrates how to make an A5-sized Coptic stitch journal with paired needles. The journal measures 5.9 x 8.4″ / 15 x 21.3cm. The size of the journal can be easily adapted.
