Two hobbyists, more than a decade of teaching, and thousands of handmade books
The Siam Bindery started as two people in Bangkok who fell for an old craft and wanted to share it. We’ve taught it in classrooms, at kitchen tables, and now, in tutorials that travel anywhere a curious pair of hands can reach.
Our story
Since our founding in 2014, we’ve taught students from every corner of the globe.
It began with Damian, who learned traditional bookbinding in Thailand and never really stopped: one journal turned into a shelf of them, then a workbench full of tools, then a small studio of hand-bound books, journals and sketchpads. He teamed up with Tony, a Bangkokian artist who spent fourteen years as Art Director for a national book chain before falling for the same slow, deliberate craft.
Together they taught beginner and advanced bookbinding across Bangkok: private lessons, public classes, and corporate workshops built around creativity and problem-solving. Their students ranged from thirteen-year-olds to people in their seventies, and their corporate clients came to include the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Thailand’s Government Pension Fund, and Thailand Industry Expo. In 2014 the pair even brought a custom bookbinding workshop to the acclaimed Jim Thompson Silk House.
The books themselves traveled further still. A wholesale partnership with New Hobby Box, a hobby subscription service in the United States, sent hundreds of our toolkits to subscribers’ doors across America, proof that a craft this hands-on could still reach people who’d never set foot in Bangkok.
Bookbinding isn’t just about making books. It’s about cultivating focus, patience, problem-solving, and a deep sense of accomplishment, the same reasons we started, and the same reasons people still pick it up today.
Where we are now
After more than a decade of workshops, corporate sessions and custom orders, we’ve stepped back from in-person teaching to focus on what travels well: tutorials you can follow at your own pace, from anywhere in the world. The techniques are the same ones we’ve taught in person for years, now written down, photographed step by step, and ready whenever you are.
